Why You Still Need Sunscreen in the Fall (According to a Westminster, MA Esthetician)

The cozy sweaters are out, the sun sets before dinner, and I’d bet money that somewhere in your bathroom cabinet, there’s a bottle of SPF you haven’t touched since Labor Day.

I get it. It’s gray outside, the autumn air is chilly, and sunscreen feels like a summer beach thing. But here’s what I keep telling clients in my treatment chair at Flutter Yen Aesthetics: the sun doesn’t actually go anywhere in the fall and winter—it just gets quieter.

The Truth About Autumn UV Rays: UVA vs. UVB

There are two primary types of ultraviolet (UV) rays coming at your skin every single day:

  • UVB Rays (The "Burn" Rays): This is the wavelength responsible for sunburns. UVB intensity really does drop off when the weather cools down here in New England—which is why you aren’t coming home pink after an October afternoon outside.

  • UVA Rays (The "Aging" Rays): This is the wavelength responsible for premature skin aging, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, and those stubborn dark spots (hyperpigmentation) that show up on your cheekbones and refuse to budge.

Here’s the catch: UVA rays barely take the season off. They dip a little in winter, but far less than UVB, so they’re still reaching your skin in November.

Even worse? UVA rays penetrate straight through cloud cover and window glass. A gray Massachusetts sky isn't a shield; it just feels like one. Whether you’re commuting down Route 2, sitting by a sunny window at work, or waiting in the school pickup line, your skin is absorbing UV damage without you feeling a thing.

Most of what clients bring to me as "unavoidable aging" is actually cumulative, quiet sun damage that built up over years of skipped daily SPF.

How to Protect Your Skin This Fall & Winter

Protecting your skin barrier during the cooler months doesn't require a complicated 10-step routine. Keep it simple:

  1. Stick to Daily Application: Wear your sunscreen daily, exactly as you did in August.

  2. Look for "Broad-Spectrum": Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. "Broad-spectrum" is the label phrase that means it’s been tested to protect against UVA rays, too. If the bottle doesn't say broad-spectrum, skip it.

  3. Layer Correctly: Apply your SPF every morning as the final step of your skincare routine—after your moisturizer, but before your makeup.

  4. Don't Skimp on Quantity: Use a generous amount. A good rule of thumb for your face and neck is the two-finger rule (two full strips of sunscreen squeezed onto your index and middle fingers).

  5. Protect Key Exposure Areas: Don't forget your ears, your neck, and the backs of your hands. These areas show visible sun damage and aging far faster than the face.

  6. Adjust for Your Day: Spending the day indoors? A single application in the morning is fine. Heading out for a football game, a hike, or leaf-peeping through Central Mass? Reapply every two hours.

Invest in Your Long-Term Glow

Applying sunscreen every morning takes less than thirty seconds. It is the single highest-return habit you can build for long-term skin health, and it costs significantly less than any corrective serum or intensive treatment.
